Some English bands

So much American music of late here and the English has been mainly folk. Went back through to see what to play this evening and this is where I lose half the readership:

Started with Cream: White Room. Uh huh, ok in retrospect, listened to a couple of others – pretentious.

Richie Blackmore was in some band I can’t remember so checked that out. Child in Time was good, very Uriah Heep, listened to a couple of others, Smoke on the Water was good.

Floyd are a bore, I was even bored back then, ditto with Yes, Free were much more the thing to me. Wishing Well was good, so were plenty of others. Seven Angels.

The Clash – sigh, still postulating like Oasis. Actually, I take that back – they were fine. Should I stay?

Don’t even mention U2 or Phil Whatsisname or excrescence Elton John, anyway, this post is about bands – leaving the megabands out of it.

Boomtown Rats – well, Geldorf is a total tosser, yes, but a couple of their songs weren’t bad. I keep forgetting some of these bands are Irish.

The Kinks had some good numbers but their touring behaviour [tossers], plus Lola – went right off them. Was going to run Sunny Afternoon, just think Ray Davies is up himself. You could say Paul Rodgers was too, oh well.

There were others over the journey – Long John Baldry, Dave Dee, Dave Clark, Zeppelin, Yardbirds were unpretentious until I’m a Man. For Your Love – not running the live version, sick of those girls screaming through the song here’s the studio version.

I play so much Stranglers, Joy Division, New Order and Hawkwind that … well let’s skip over then for now. Who’ve I forgotten? Queen, yes. FM puts me off my food. Anyone else?

Once we get to the 80s/90s, the scene changes – I like Pale Saints. Sight of You best. Best concert I ever saw? Roxy Music.

Goodness there were some great English bands over the journey.

…..

Quick word to readers – if you post urls to youtubes [welcome to], I’ll convert them back to urls in the comment, just as I do now in the posts. Forgive, it’s a tech thing.

No mention of the great Peter Green? – I was watching the 2012 olympic opening the other day – with Mike Oldfield… I knew Mike Oldfield from when he played in the Kevin Ayers band (The Whole World) — before Richard Branson’s Tubular Bells – which was mildly interesting but basically shite – I associate it with The Exorcist

Well of course – Peter Green, Mayall, Fleetwood Mac. Only so much space and it looked more like hard rock the way it was going.

      Peter Green.

Sorry to desecrate the links, M’Lud, nothing is altered except:

      1. The link is in ‘share’ form rather than ‘watch’ url;
      2. Name of the band/artist rather than ‘watch’ link.

As you’ll see, comes to the same thing. I’ll get working on them now.

      …….

OK, all converted. Your version of the Graham Parker was unviewable in the UK, so found another live version – hope you can view it in the States.

The Move I knew, GP and the Spectrum, didn’t know the other two.

I think music is very subjective so I tend not to criticize any, even stuff I don’t personally like. It doesn’t matter where it came from, how old or new, every song I like seems to remind me of a particular incident in, or part of my life where that song was prominent at the time. Perhaps that is why I like it, happy or sad. Music has always played a big part in my life, though I have always tried to look deeper than the mainstream stuff.

This Welsh band, I saw so many times that they became personal friends. Sadly lost touch with years ago.

The kind of variation I listen to, not all English and in no chronological order.

This is a mix of two tracks from two bands. Works pretty well IMO.

Finally I find this band fascinating, playing here with Annette Strean from Venus Hum. Strean nails this song.

There is a list of bands between every pair of ears. I don’t think that mine would differ much from any of the above. King Crimson would make it in, as would Style Council, Slade, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Wishbone Ash. If we ignore the politics of Style Council to include them are we allowed to put aside other things to include The Glitter Band and Johnathon King? Purely for the music.

Referencing your latest post; I’m both bored and on edge. I don’t have a mask, will I be allowed into a shop to buy one? If I starve at home alone will someone come to collect my body? What was it that the guy shouted while leaning out of a window? Something like “I’ve had enough and I’m not going to take any more”.

Dear Ansy, yep – they have it in for the indigenous now, no doubt of it, trying to force us to waste the summer indoors at home.
